Name: Cross Marian Fandom: D.Grayman Area of Residence: Greenwich Village Character History: Cross Marian was born on January 31, 1979 in Limerick Ireland. He was left one cold evening on the footsteps of a Catholic Church which also ran an orphanage. Because of his unusual blood red hair, many believed in the old Pagan belief that it was a sign of being possessed by the devil. Thankfully, the oldest nun there, Sister Mary Beth decided to look past that and take him in. Growing up in the orphanage wasn't easy. He had a strict Catholic upbringing and was taught to both worship and fear God. Cross wasn't very much of a Catholic as he liked to believe in tangible things rather than the supernatural. He believed that everything should have a scientific explanation behind its existence. This unique view on the Church and religion resulted in him being ostracized by the priests, nuns, and the rest of his peers. This resulted in Cross having no one but Sister Mary Beth, who was the only one willing to interact with him. Cross was notoriously known for his mischief. He was constantly bored and liked keeping himself busy by cheating people out of money to buy candy and dirty books. If he wasn't raising hell, then he was at the library reading anything he could get his hands on about science. But due to limited resources at the Limerick public library, Cross found himself in more mischief than not. None of the other sisters had the patience to deal with Cross. Sister Mary Beth was the only one who cared enough about Cross to keep him in place. She administered tough love when it came to Cross, punishing him with a ruler named Judgment and having him read and recite parts of the bible, while she enjoyed a glass of fine red wine. When Sister Mary Beth got a bit too tipsy, Cross would get some of the wine himself. Since then, he and Sister Mary Beth would, from time to time, enjoy a glass (Of course his wine was a bit diluted with a bit of water). Despite his rambunctious behavior, Cross learned to both respect and love Sister Mary Beth. Cross was never adopted. Whether this was due to his unusual hair or the silly superstition behind it or his infamous behavior, he didn't care. He didn't want to get adopted because that meant leaving the orphanage. And although he hated the place, he liked being with Sister Mary Beth more. When Cross turned sixteen, Sister Mary Beth died. Cross turned to alcohol to fill the void that Sister Mary Beth left behind. He began to get into more mischief than ever before. With Sister Beth gone, no one could control him. He began sleeping with the recently recruited young nuns until he was eventually kicked out of the orphanage for sexual misconduct. Cross, barely seventeen, left with no qualms. He had nothing there to stay for, so he took his leave. He became a drifter, never staying in one place for more than a week or until the husbands of many of the town women wanted to tan his hide. He settled down a bit in London and eventually got a gun, which he named Judgment, for his own protection. He keeps the gun strapped to his calve and only takes it out when necessary. Cross did odd jobs when he wanted, but most of the time he gambled for money. At age 20 he became a very expensive male escort. He didn't mind this type of work as long as he got whatever he wanted. He provided his services to rich women who were all to happy to spoil him rotten. Most of his sexual services weren't even needed as the women were too old and just wanted him to look pretty. This gave Cross the opportunity to run rabid. He ran up enormous tabs, slept with high class call girls, smoked imported cigars, and drank the finest wines and liquors. He did want he wanted, when he wanted, and lived the paradise life only a hedonist could dream of. He became a very demanding individual, and got what he wanted no matter the cost. Cross wasn't above doing something illegal in order to get what he wanted either. At 21 Cross met Froi Tiedoll, a rich nobleman and artist. Tiedoll was a dear friend of Cross's latest customer. The old man became the very first person in which Cross's charm did not work. Flustered, Cross tried his best to break the man and make him do whatever he wanted. Only Tiedoll saw through Cross's veneer and thought the young man possessed a lot of potential and promise. He wanted Cross to channel that energy into something positive instead of trying to clown people out of their money. Tiedoll challenged Cross's hedonistic ideals, telling him there's more to life than living out one's pleasures. There's knowledge to obtain and things to experience that don't require one to lay in bed with a stranger. Cross saw Tiedoll as a challenge and wanted to prove that living a hedonistic life was the way to live. Tiedoll challenged Cross by offering to pay for Cross to finish school. Tiedoll had his reasons. If Cross could gain knowledge and an education, would he still feel the same about his previous life? Cross, not wanting to be made further into a fool decided to take the man's offer (If only to prove him wrong AND get a degree in the process). He spent most of his years with the artist while attending school. He re-found his love for the subject of science again and decided to study both Chemistry and Physics. Tiedoll was the closest thing to a father Cross, though the redhead would never admit it. The man became a source of wisdom for Cross. Tiedoll taught him that life isn't about aesthetics and like art, when stripped of it's beauty, is left with the gritty, foundation of reality that's full of mistakes . But Tiedoll's generosity didn't stop Cross from falling back into old habits. He still gambled, drank, and slept around. Despite this, he excelled in his university studies, graduating in three years with honors from the University of Oxford. He then went on to complete a Masters in Physics and a PhD in Chemistry. After completing his studies, Cross decided to parted ways with Tiedoll. He admitted defeat in Tiedoll's challenge, finding that he did indeed enjoy life more now that he wasn't as ignorant as he was before. But the thirty year old admitted that despite losing, he'd never give up his great loves: gambling, booze, money, and women. After leaving London, Cross decided to come to the States. He currently works as a Chemistry Professor at St. Jude's School for Boys. | |
